Bourbon Barbecue Sauce

For a Father's Day treat, I decided to vamp up my Celeste's Barbecue Sauce recipe by adding some bourbon to it for grilled barbecue chicken.  It turned out fantastic!  The sauce is sweet and tangy with just the right amount of bourbon.

  Happy Father's Day!

Ingredients:
Yields about 14 oz
  • 1 c onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, diced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 2/3 c ketchup
  • 1/2 c distilled white vinegar
  • 1/3 c brown sugar
  • 1/3 c Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 c whiskey bourbon
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • Pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste

Directions:

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Add the onions and cook until soft, about 8 to 10 minutes.  Stir in the garlic and cook for one minute longer.

Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet and bring the sauce to a boil.  Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Strain the sauce into a medium bowl.  Cover and chill until ready to use.

Enjoy!
