Resurrection Rolls - Teaches Children the Story of Easter

Resurrection rolls are a fun (and tasty) way to share the Easter story with your children.  The hollow roll represents the empty tomb and all of the other ingredients used represent a part of the Easter story as well.

Happy Easter!

Ingredients:
Adapted from Allrecipes

  • Refrigerated flaky biscuits
  • 1/2 c pecans
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 8 large marshmallows
  • Freezer bag
  • Rolling pin
  • Bible

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees, or according to package instructions.

Crucifixion
Place the pecans in a freezer bag and have someone crush them with a hard object such as a rolling pin until they are finely crushed.  Explain that the act of crushing of the pecans symbolizes Jesus being beaten for our sins.

Read John 19:1-11:
"So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.
And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.
Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands.
Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”
Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”
Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid,
and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
11 Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

Also read Isaiah 53:5:
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed."

Please excuse the robe - my little sous chef has been running a fever all weekend :(

Death
Flatten out the biscuit dough with your fingers.  Sprinkle the crushed pecans evenly over the dough.

Read John 19:28-30:
28 "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit."

Preparing Jesus' Body for Burial
Explain that the marshmallow represents Jesus' body.  The marshmallow is white, which symbolizes the purity of Jesus / lack of sin.  The cinnamon represents the spices used to prepare Jesus' body.  Place the marshmallows in the center of each biscuit round and sprinkle cinnamon on top.  Gather up the sides of the dough around the marshmallows and seal the edges together.  Explain that this symbolizes Jesus' body being wrapped before being placed in the tomb.

Read John 19:38-40:
38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury."

Burial
Place the biscuits seam-side down on a lightly greased baking sheet.  Place them in a preheated oven and bake according to package instructions, 8 to 11 minutes for my biscuits.  Explain that placing them in the oven represents Jesus being placed in the tomb.

Read John 19:41-42:
41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
42 So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

Also read Matthew 27:59-61:
59 "When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.
61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb."

Resurrection
Remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to cool slightly.  Because the marshmallows have puffed up and seeped out of the bottom, they are hollow!  Bite into them and explain that the hollow rolls represents Jesus' empty tomb.  He is risen!

Read Matthew 28: 1-9:
1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.
His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.
And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him."

Also read John 3:16:
16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Ascension
While enjoying your rolls, read Mark 16:14-20:
14 "Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen."
