Baked Crab Rangoon Dip & Homemade Wonton Chips

Last night was a big night for us.  Eagles versus Cowboys for a chance to go to the playoffs.  I was cautiously optimistic, but if history is a good predictor of the future, at the very least, I was going to have something good to snack on!  I had made our favorite crab cakes for dinner and found myself with some leftover crab.  After some thought, I decided to turn one of my favorite appetizers into a dip.  This crab rangoon dip doesn't disappoint!  It's creamy, delicious and tastes just like my favorite Chinese takeout's crab rangoons.  The homemade wontons are airy, crisp and super easy to make.

As for the game, it was a nail biter as usual, but it tuned out to be a thing of beauty!  I'm already thinking about what to make for the playoff game against the Saints!

Ingredients:

  • 1 c cooked crab meat
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • 1/2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/16 tsp onion salt
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional:  Chopped green onions, for garnish

Wonton Chips:

  • 2 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 c water

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine the crab, cream cheese, sour cream, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, paprika and onion salt.  Taste and season with salt, to taste.  Spoon the crab mixture into an oven-safe dish.  Bake for 25 minutes, or until the top begins to brown.

Meanwhile, make the wonton chips.  Add cooking oil 1 inch deep in a medium pan.  Preheat the oil over medium-high heat.  In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, egg and water and mix together with a spoon.  Once a dough consistency forms, use your hands to knead the dough until smooth and elastic.  Roll out the dough as thin as you can on a lightly floured surface.  Cut the dough into triangle shapes.  Dock the dough triangles on both sides with the tines of a fork.  Add the triangles to the hot oil in batches and fry until golden brown.  Once you remove them from the hot oil in each batch, sprinkle lightly with salt.

Remove the dip from the oven and allow it to sit for 5 minutes before serving.  Garnish with green onions, if desired.  Serve with the wonton chips.

Enjoy!
